Long life is a key element of sustainability, the longer something lasts the less damage it should do to the environment in use. The British Board of Agrément (BBA) certifies the Sika-Trocal family of membranes to have a life expectancy in excess of 35 years.

Sika-Trocal membranes weigh between 1.9 kg/m² and 2.5 kg/m² providing lightweight roofing systems that require less supporting structure beneath them than alternative roofing systems such as metal and bitumen.

The resulting reduction in the structural mass contributes to less material use in the overall construction of the building.

Solar Reflectivity

The absorbance of solar radiation by dark coloured surfaces creates the Albedo or urban heat island (the solar heating of an urban environment) affect. This affect can be greatly reduced by using white or light coloured Sika-Trocal membranes instead of traditional dark roofing materials such as bitumen.

On 26th May 2009 U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, stated the world should try to have white roofs everywhere to help fight climate change, highlighting that having white flat roofs (cool roofs) on homes and commercial buildings would reflect more of the suns heat back to space and reduce electricity used for air conditioning by as much as 15 percent.

Air Leakage

The Building Regulations Approved Documents L of the Building Regulations (England and Wales) and Scottish Building Standards Agency (SBSA) Technical Documents Section 6 set requirements for air leakage testing as part of the ongoing drive to reduce buildings carbon emissions.

In the early 1990s Sika-Trocals oldest client Tesco, carried out air leakage testing on some of its buildings roofed with mechanically fastened Sika-Trocal Type S membrane, achieving results far in excess of 10m3/h/m2 at 50Pa required under the current Building Regulations.

Sika-Trocal membranes can be recycled back into alternative products at the end of their useful life, as can new site waste.

As part of ESWA (European Single Ply Waterproofing Association) since 1993 Sika-Trocal support the industry voluntary commitment to recycling.

Green Building Council

Sika are a member of The Green Building Council.

The UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) is a membership organisation campaigning for a sustainable built environment – one that minimises negative environmental impacts while maximising benefits for people everywhere.
